About this print
A ball-and-stick model of caffeine (C₈H₁₀N₄O₂), generated from the NIH's PubChem data. The ring structure and where the nitrogen and oxygen atoms sit are easy to see and count.
A familiar molecule makes a good hook for structural formulas, molecular formulas and counting atoms, and for talking about what caffeine does in the body.
Design by norbimakes3d on Printables, shared under CC0 1.0 (public domain). The files and photos are the designer's, unchanged.
Printing and using it
- Print with supports. The 3MF project file is set up for multi-colour printing; with one colour, paint the atoms afterwards.
- Students count the atoms of each element and write the molecular formula.
- Compare it with the structural formula on paper: which ring is which?
