About this print

Gears with 20, 30 and 60 teeth that plug into a pegboard (a cheap one from a shop, or the printable base), so young children can build their own gear trains.

They discover that meshing gears turn in opposite directions and that a small gear turns faster than a big one. Older students can design their own gears from the CAD files (module 1.25 mm).

Design by Nick Kennedy on Printables, shared under CC BY 4.0. The files and photos are the designer's, unchanged.

Printing and using it

  1. Print a set of gears and the base (or use a pegboard).
  2. Mirror the arrow gear in the slicer for one that points the other way.
  3. Challenges: make the last gear turn the same way as the first; make it turn faster; make it turn slower.
  4. Older students: count teeth and predict how many turns the last gear makes.
