About this print
An oversized molecular model kit for the front of the class: atoms with 1, 2, 3 or 4 bonds (and a smaller hydrogen), bonds in several lengths, rigid or flexible, that can spin or lock, and caps to hold them.
Big enough for everyone to see, it shows molecular shape, single and double bonds (with the flexible stems), and rotation around a single bond.
Design by 3D Printy on Printables, shared under CC0 1.0 (public domain). The files and photos are the designer's, unchanged.
Printing and using it
- Print atoms in the usual colours: carbon black, hydrogen white, oxygen red, nitrogen blue.
- Print flexible stems in PETG or a rigid TPU; in PLA they will eventually snap.
- Build methane, water and carbon dioxide together, then let students build ethene and ethanol.
- Ask why water is bent while carbon dioxide is straight.
