Gigo Robotics Module: The Compassionate Coding Mission
Description
In this purpose-driven, screenless robotics activity, lower primary students transition from basic brick builders into active Mission Programmers. This project beautifully merges early computer science logic with a vital lesson in morality, empathy, and social responsibility. Students are presented with a large 16X16 grid map (can be adjusted by teacher preference) representing a diverse city home to various community members, including families facing financial hardship.
Initially, students engage with the map using a physical game figure to manually chart paths for distributing food supplies, introducing them to the concept of optimization and the "shortest mathematical path". They then learn to automate this task using a Gigo Robot equipped with an onboard card-scanning sensor slot. Rather than coding on digital screens, students use tactile, physical direction cards (Forward, Backward, Left, and Right) to command their hardware.
Through structured exploration, students decode how specific sequences of physical command cards directly alter the robot's hardware path. The challenge culminates as teams mathematically calculate their code length, scan their complete directional sequences, and send their robots driving autonomously across the city grid to execute their moral mission of delivering food to families in need.
