Shape Up! Build-a-Fish: From Paper to Aquarium
Description
In this hands-on STEAM activity, students design and build their own unique fish using pre-cut 2D paper shapes (circles, rectangles, squares, triangles, parallelograms). Once their fish is complete, they count and record the shapes they used, then watch their creation come to life through an animated aquarium webapp where their paper fish "swims" digitally.
The activity bridges the tangible and the digital — children physically manipulate shapes with their hands, then experience the magic of seeing their static creation transformed into a moving, living-looking thing on screen. This transition from paper to pixel becomes a powerful introduction to how technology can extend creativity.
The lesson closes with an inquiry-based discussion where students compare fish, notice differences, and discover that the same set of shapes can produce endlessly different outcomes, a foundational idea in both mathematics (combinations) and design thinking (creative variation).
