The Color Detectives: RYB & CMY Experiment
Description
In this hands-on STEAM activity, students take on the role of "Color Detectives" and little artists to solve a colorful mystery. The activity starts with a fun story time hook: students read a special dummy book where the colors slowly fade and disappear from the pages!
Children are challenged to fix the book, but there is a problem: they only have three colors to work with. Over the course of the project, they will learn the magic of color mixing using the traditional RYB (Red, Yellow, Blue) and the vibrant CMY (Cyan, Magenta, Yellow) color systems. This provides an authentic introduction to simple cause-and-effect, showing them that mixing two different colors creates a brand new one.
This module is designed to be easy to manage in a kindergarten classroom. It blends digital technology (using the pahoasteam.space screen) with hands-on painting. Students practice early math by using numbers 1 to 5 concretely (counting milliliters of paint with syringes) to find the perfect "color recipes." The project ends with a creative painting task, a reflection journal, and a fun group presentation where students practice communicating their discoveries.
