About

What is the Hole & Soil 3D Explorer?

The Hole & Soil 3D Explorer is an interactive, isometric sandbox that allows students to manipulate digital terrain. By digging holes and creating soil humps, users can physically explore the concepts of volume, conservation of mass, and spatial reasoning. Dragging a mound of soil into an empty hole triggers a satisfying 3D animation where the two elements cancel each other out, restoring the flat ground.

Using it in class

This tool beautifully bridges the gap between tactile play and abstract mathematical logic.

Mathematics: Positive & Negative Integers
This simulation is a perfect visual representation of "Zero Pairs". A soil hump represents a positive integer (+1), while a hole represents a negative integer (-1). When a student drags a +1 hump into a -1 hole, they visually experience the equation (+1) + (-1) = 0 as the terrain flattens out completely.

Spatial Reasoning & Geometry
By utilizing an isometric 3D camera that can be rotated 90 degrees, students develop their spatial awareness. They must track where objects are located on the Z and X axes, understanding how objects in the foreground might occlude (hide) objects in the background until the camera is rotated.
