About
What is Transformation of Function?
Transformation of Function is an interactive mathematical graphing utility designed to help students master the concept of function transformations. By manipulating variables in the standard function formula y = a · f((x - c) / b) + d, users can instantly observe how algebraic adjustments map to physical, geometric shifts (translations, dilations, and reflections) on a Cartesian coordinate plane.
Mathematical Perspectives
This module focuses entirely on the algebraic logic of coordinate geometry and non-rigid transformations.
Translations (Shifts)
Students can isolate the variables c and d to observe translations. They learn the counter-intuitive rule that subtracting a positive value from x inside the function shifts the graph to the right, whereas adding to the outside of the function shifts the y values up.
Dilations (Stretches)
By adjusting the a and b parameters, the application visually demonstrates non-rigid stretching. Multiplying the entire function by a causes a vertical stretch, while adjusting the inner parameter b creates a horizontal stretch or compression.
Reflections
Dragging the a or b sliders past zero into negative territory creates an instant visual reflection. This physically demonstrates how a negative coefficient flips the coordinate mapping across the x-axis or y-axis.
