About

What is Place Value?

Place Value is a highly interactive, digital mathematics manipulative that simulates physical Base-10 blocks. It provides a free-form virtual workspace where students can visually explore number composition up to 999. The application accurately models the mechanics of arithmetic by allowing students to magnetically snap blocks together, break them apart, and watch them automatically regroup and convert as they move between units, tens, and hundreds.

Mathematical Perspectives

This module focuses entirely on building a deep, intuitive understanding of the Base-10 number system and core arithmetic operations.

Number Composition
By looking at the live Readout panel, students can easily see how large numbers are composed. They can visually map that "234" is simply a collection of two Hundreds (purple blocks), three Tens (green blocks), and four Units (blue blocks), demystifying abstract numeric symbols.

Addition & Regrouping ("Carrying")
This simulation excels at teaching the core mechanic of addition. If a student connects 10 units together, or clicks "Auto Group", the simulation will automatically pull them together and seamlessly convert them into a single "Ten" block—visually proving exactly why we "carry the 1" in written math!

Subtraction & Decomposition ("Borrowing")
When performing subtraction on paper, "borrowing" from the next column can seem like an arbitrary rule to young learners. In this workspace, students can physically double-click a "Ten" block to instantly shatter it into 10 individual "Unit" blocks, allowing them to solve subtraction problems visually and logically.
