About
What is Rotational and Reflectional Symmetry?
Rotational and Reflectional Symmetry is an interactive geometric sandbox designed to help students tangibly explore fundamental shape transformations. By interacting with various 2D polygons, students can fold shapes across axes or spin them around their center points to discover how many times a shape perfectly maps onto itself.
Mathematical Applications
This tool brings abstract transformations to life through beautiful, responsive 3D animations and visual tracking.
Reflectional Symmetry (Lines of Symmetry)
A line of symmetry divides a shape into two identical mirror images. In Reflection mode, students can drag the axis line to any degree from 0° to 180° and click "Fold". The app performs a 3D transformation. If the folded half perfectly covers the other half, a Line of Symmetry has been discovered and permanently logged on the screen!
Rotational Symmetry (Order)
A shape has rotational symmetry if it maps perfectly onto its original outline before completing a full 360° turn. In Rotation mode, students slide the shape along a 360° track. Every time the colored shape perfectly aligns inside the dashed original boundary, the "Order of Symmetry" increases.
