About

What is Wheel Detectives?

Wheel Detectives is an interactive visualizer designed to help students conceptually solve the famous ancient Chinese mathematical problem known as the "Chicken and Rabbit Problem." By using familiar modern objects—motorcycles (2 wheels) and cars (4 wheels)—students can intuitively distribute parts and grasp the foundational concepts of early algebraic substitution and simultaneous equations without relying purely on abstract numbers.

Mathematical Perspectives

This module focuses entirely on logical reasoning, grouping algorithms, and visualizing algebraic substitution.

The "Base Grouping" Strategy
The classic way to solve this problem is to assume all entities are the smaller value. In this game, clicking "Distribute 2 to All" gives every mystery vehicle 2 wheels (simulating that everything is a motorcycle). This instantly shows students exactly how many "extra" wheels are left over.

Isolating Variables
Once every vehicle has 2 wheels, the remaining wheels in the shop represent the difference needed to convert a motorcycle into a car. Because a car needs 2 *more* wheels, students realize they can simply divide the remaining unassigned wheels by 2 to perfectly determine the exact number of cars!

Pre-Algebra Foundation
This interactive drag-and-drop methodology is a tactile representation of simultaneous equations: M + C = Total Vehicles and 2M + 4C = Total Wheels. By physically moving the parts, younger students build the logical framework necessary for advanced algebra later in life.
