About
What is the Number Bond Game?
The Number Bond Game is an interactive, digital adaptation of the classic "Shut the Box" mathematics game.
Players roll a pair of 3D dice and must strategically select combinations of available numbers (from 1 to 9)
that perfectly sum up to the total rolled. The game challenges players to balance mental arithmetic with
probability and risk management to clear the board and maximize their score!
Mathematical Perspectives
This module focuses on developing fluency in addition, number composition, and practical probability.
**Number Composition
(Partitioning)**
The core mechanic forces students to break down larger numbers into smaller components. If a player
rolls an 8, they must quickly calculate available bonds: it could be just 8, or 5+3, or even 4+3+1.
This builds immense flexibility with numbers.
Strategic Optimization
The Scoring Multiplier introduces risk vs. reward mechanics. Selecting a single number grants 10
points, but using three numbers grants 90 points. Students must evaluate if they should maximize
their score now or save specific small digits for harder rolls later in the game.
Applied Probability
Since the game uses two 6-sided dice, rolls like 6, 7, and 8 are statistically much more common than
2 or 12. As the board empties, students instinctively begin applying probability—realizing they need
to clear out the hard-to-roll high and low numbers while they have the chance.
