About

What is Quadratic Boomerang?

Quadratic Boomerang is a gamified coordinate geometry challenge that tests a student's ability to manipulate
the standard quadratic equation: y = ax² + bx + c. By interacting with the width,
shift, and height parameters, players must reverse-engineer the perfect parabolic curve to
intersect three randomly generated target coordinates (lattice points) on the grid.

STEM connections

This module blends abstract algebra with physics simulation and visual art to create a highly engaging
problem-solving environment.

Mathematics: Quadratic Equations & Parabolas

Students move beyond memorization to intuitively grasp how the coefficients a,
b, and c alter the parabola's shape. They quickly learn that
c dictates the y-intercept, a dictates the concavity (width and
direction), and b shifts the vertex laterally across the plane. Because 3 distinct
points uniquely define a parabola, there is only one perfect integer solution to each puzzle!

Science: Kinematics & Projectile Motion

Any object thrown through the air under the influence of gravity (like a ball, a rocket, or a
boomerang) follows a parabolic trajectory. This mathematical curve directly models real-world
physics and kinematics, showing how math accurately predicts the flight path of moving bodies over
time.

Arts: Visual Effects & Rendering

The visualization utilizes dynamic coordinate transformation, rendering abstract mathematical data
points into a smooth, glowing flight path complete with interactive particle physics, smooth
rotations, and explosive visual feedback upon successful target collection.
